No central heat No sludge My Two-Story Row House is cooled all summer much by this glass AC.

What are the main restaurants from CNET?

The Windmill AC generally costs$ 349 for 6, 000 BTUs, but you can usually locate it on sale on Windmill’s site or at&nbsp, Amazon or Home Depot. &nbsp,

  • The Windmill AC is not only the simplest AC unit I’ve always installed, but it is also the only one I tried that successfully kept my older, poorly-insulated home nice during a heat wave. &nbsp,
  • Bonus: It’s really fashionable. Despite this, I still would have paid for a functionally unpleasant one. &nbsp,
  • Although its typical price is higher than some other windows AC products, I’ve paid the same or more for products with comparable features that didn’t work because also. &nbsp,

I’m a junkie for an older home. With its history and high ceilings, my present rental, a 100-year-old row house with original 1920s art deco tile, attracted me. However, it also came with a difficult trade-off: lack of central air conditioning and weak insulation.

Every summer, like mechanical, I’d buy and check out new glass air conditioning, just to feel frustrated by how badly they worked. At the end of the time, I would sell them, and the pattern would revert to normal operation the following spring.

The Windmill WhisperTech window air conditioner was the product of years of sweating through sweltering three-digit heat and excessive moisture. This impressive powerhouse was so successful at cooling my large master bedroom, that I finally bought two more. Yet duringĀ  intense heat waves, these three AC models successfully cool my 2, 500-square-foot Philadelphia column home. And they look fantastic while doing it.

As a individual finance director, I know how expensive home technology and devices have gotten nowadays. Although the Windmill AC isn’t the least expensive opportunity available, for me, it was well worth every penny. Here’s why I didn’t prevent recommending this game-changing AC if you’re even fed up with the scorching heat inside.

I’ve had the 12, 000 BTU Windmill WhisperTech weather condition for three decades, and it keeps our king room cozy during extreme temperatures. ( It’s fashionable, too! ) Courtney Johnston/CNET

My experience with the Windmill heat conditioning

When it first arrived, I was dubious about the Windmill window air conditioner. I panicked because it was lighter than other models I’d tried out ( I could pick it up myself ), believing that there was no way this one could nice our south-facing 350 plus square foot home.

But within days, my partner and I had the system installed and running. Our home dropped to 68 degrees Fahrenheit after just a short while, which wasn’t the case with previous ACs. On humid days, the humidity, which frequently increased to 65 % or higher, also dropped below 50 %. I was extremely impressed by how well it maintained its set heat, to. particularly during strong steam waves. &nbsp,

The very next day, I ordered a minute component for the other end of our home.

Note: At our Louisville tests labs, CNET conducts clinical tests on window ACs. This summer, we will be testing the Windmill AC unit there to see how quickly it is cool a heated room at 92 degrees Fahrenheit and how well it can sustain 68 degrees Fahrenheit. This is a challenging test that some AC models fail to pass.

What makes the Windmill AC unique?

Windmill air conditioners have a dozen distinctive characteristics, but the cooling design of the unit inspired me to purchase one for my collection. For better heating, wind ACs push great heat out of the unit’s bottom at a 45 degree angle. After trying several big name window ACs that pushed air out horizontally, I was excited to find that this feature actually cooled a second-story room with a tall ceiling, the air seemed to circulate better since the unit pushes the cold air up, rather than out and down.

No longer are the ugly AC units hiding.

As long as it cooled my home, I’d deal with an ugly air conditioner. But I’m glad I don’t have to. Many of my friends and family have commented on the Windmill air conditioner‘s sleek, minimalist design. The unit has a stylish front panel design that conceals its air filter and contains tiny buttons that are nearly hidden at the top of the panel. &nbsp,

You don’t have to worry about disturbing your vision at night because the LED display lights automatically dim. Additionally, it comes with side panel covers for a more seamless appearance and insulation.

Windmill also offers colorful magnetic panel fronts to add some whimsy to your window, if you’re into that kind of thing. &nbsp,

It’s the quietest AC I’ve ever had.

Although it wasn’t a main selling point for me, I’m now a huge fan of Windmill’s Whispertech quiet cooling technology. I just assumed that would come with some noise, so my top priority was an air conditioner that made my house feel cozy. It is described as 42 decibels, which is softer than the typical household refrigerator. I found my Windmill units comfortably quiet, even after regularly using two for almost three years.

Without bothering us, my partner and I can talk to each other from other ends of the house, watch TV at normal volume, and take work calls. In our bedroom at night, I actually like the white noise effect it creates.

I do sometimes find the running noise distracting when I’m on work calls, but that would happen with any AC since my window is right next to my desk. I simply switch to low or eco-mode to resolve this issue because it typically only occurs when the device is high or medium.

You can install it quickly ( really ) in minutes.

I’ve installed three of these units in multiple homes and windows, and it only takes me five to ten minutes to set up. Because this unit comes preassembled, that’s true. Before installing it, there is no gluing brackets or panels or screwing brackets onto the base.

All you have to do is add the window foam to the sides of your windows, set the unit onto your window pane, expand the side panels, shut your window, then secure it with screws. You can secure it to a block of wood if you can’t drill into your window panes or if you rent ( like me ) but don’t want to. &nbsp,

I usually have my partner help me install this ( one of us lifts while the other opens and lowers the window ), but I’ve successfully installed it on my own in the past. &nbsp,

It has voice control and a smart app included.

Windmill will send a remote with your window AC, but if you have multiple units to control, I highly recommend using Windmill’s smart app. Your device is installed and registered in just a few minutes ( they send a QR code to make setup even simpler ). &nbsp,

The Windmill app makes it easy to control settings for multiple window air conditioners in one spot.

Courtney Johnston’s screen shot

If you leave the house and forget to adjust the temperature before leaving, the app is simple to use and useful. It does occasionally show the wrong temperatures, though. My office AC’s temperature on the app appeared to be 61 degrees when it was clearly not, but a quick reset of the thermostat corrected that.

Similar to a smart thermostat, automation can be made to turn on the thermostat, speed up the process, or even shut the unit off at specific times of the day. It’s a great tool if you want to raise the temperature while you’re at work or away for a weekend.

If you’re interested in using voice control with Alexa, it seems simple to set up.

Eco mode keeps my energy bill low.

Since I have gas heat, my electric bill tends to go up in the summer when I’m running the AC. I don’t worry about high energy bills any longer, though that’s still the case. My rooms stay cool thanks to Windmill’s eco-mode, which prevents me from having to pay a surprise electric bill. &nbsp,

Windmill air conditioners have a combined energy efficiency rating of 15 and are Energy Star-rated. Air conditioners must have a CEER rating of 12 or higher to be eligible for an Energy Star rating. &nbsp,

eliminates the problem of storage

When I’m not using my air conditioners, I have a chance to have a basement where I can store them. But if you don’t have an extra closet or garage to house these units during the winter, Windmill sells winter covers that will protect your unit, keep your house insulated, and add a pop of color ( if you choose ) to your window.

Although the available options are currently a little limited and I don’t personally like any of the color schemes they have, I like this concept.

CNET’s buying advice

Everyone I know who is looking for one of Windmill window air conditioners, I can recommend them. My three units I own have been nothing but positive experiences. They’ve outperformed GE and Midea air conditioners I’ve tried in the past and work well to keep my humid row house cool and comfortable.

The cost of the Windmill air conditioner is its biggest negative aspect. You can find more reasonably priced options than competitors like Midea and July (yes, they’re an AC company named after one of the hottest months of the year ). Paying$ 630 for a 12, 000 BTU window air conditioner is a steep price, but you can frequently find them on sale at Windmill’s website or at Amazon, Home Depot, Lowes, P. C. Richards and Costco.

Don’t go into debt to purchase a Windmill AC if it isn’t in your budget. Consider the GE AHEC05AC window AC, which is CNET’s best affordable option, for between$ 160 and$ 170. &nbsp,
