The number of big language models ( LLMs) that OpenAI has made available as alternatives for powering its hit chatbot has rapidly increased in the 2.5 times since the company debuted ChatGPT.
In fact, there are now 7 (!!! ) in total. different AI models available to paying ChatGPT subscribers ( of the$ 20 Plus tier and more expensive tiers ) based on their preferences when interacting with the trustworthy chatbot, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.
However, how does a user choose the appropriate fast, query, or task? After all, you can just get one at once.

Is there assistance on the way?
As reports have surfaced over the past few days on X from AI influencers, including OpenAI’s own researcher” Roon ( @tszzl on X )” ( speculated as technical team member Tarun Gogineni), a new “router” function that will automatically choose the best OpenAI model to respond to the user’s input on the fly, depending on the specific input’s content, help appears to be on the way from OpenAI.
In since-deleted reaction to influence Lisan al Gaib’s claim that they “don’t like a model modem, I want to be able to find the models I use, Roon stated on the social network X yesterday, July 20, 2025:” I don’t want a model router. I want to be able to choose the models I use.”
You’ll still be able to make your choice. This item is designed to prevent doctors from being stuck on 4o-mini.

Similar things were said in an X blog by Yuchen Jin, co-founder and CTO of Hyperbolic Labs, on July 19.
” Read GPT-5 is coming soon, from a small birds.
- There are many models, not just one. It has a network that toggles between the use of tools, non-reasons, and argument models.
- That’s why Sam claimed they “fixed type naming”: prompts may simply auto-route to the appropriate type.
- GPT-6 is currently in teaching.
I really hope they won’t put off more security checks. : )”
Although a presumably much more sophisticated GPT-5 model would ( and will ) be significant news if and when it is released, the router may make life much simpler and smarter for the typical ChatGPT subscriber.
It would follow on the feet of another third-party items, such as the web-based Token Monster robot, which automatically selects and combines reactions from various third-party LLMs to respond to user concerns.
An OpenAI spokesperson declined to respond to a request for comment or additional information at this time when I was asked about the router idea and comments from” Roon.”
overcoming the difficulty of decision overload
To be clear, every moment OpenAI releases a new LLM to the people, it makes sure to disclose in either a blog post or launch notes what it believes that certain LLM is effective for and intended to aid in.
For instance, benchmarking tests showed that OpenAI’s “o” set logic designs, o3, o4-mini, and o4-mini large, performed better on math, science, and programming testing, whereas non-reasoning models, like the fresh GPT-4.5 and 4.1, show improvement in creative writing and communication tasks.
Dedicated AI celebrities and electricity users may be well aware of what all these various types are good at and not so great at.
Regular users who don’t follow the market as carefully or have the time and money to check them all out on the same type prompts and examine the outputs will inevitably struggle to understand the confusing range of options.
That could indicate that they are missing out on more sophisticated, intelligent, or competent responses from ChatGPT for their task at hand. And as Roon noted, the distinction could be between life or death in fields like medicine.
Additionally, it’s intriguing to speculate on how an automatic LLM router might affect general public attitudes and adoption of AI.
In March, ChatGPT had already recorded 500 million active users. The impact of AI on their workloads and the global economy’s overall economy would appear to be much more acutely felt if more of these people were automatically guided toward more intelligent and capable LLMs to handle their AI queries, creating a positive” snowball” effect.
In other words, Mai mult şi Mai mult people and organizations would likely be persuaded by the utility of AI and be Mai mult willing to pay for it as Mai mult people saw Mai mult benefits from ChatGPT automatically choosing the right AI model for their queries and as Mai mult businesses gained greater efficiency from this process. As a result, even Mai mult AI-powered workflows would become widely used around the world.
However, this is presumably being slowed down a little by the fact that the ChatGPT model picker requires the user to A. know they even have a choice of models and B. have some level of informed awareness of what these models are good for. It continues to be manually done.
The typical ChatGPT user is currently faced with an overabundance of choices, much like going to the supermarket in your town and staring at aisles of cereal and various sauces.
Any illogical OpenAI router should be able to seamlessly guide them to the appropriate model to meet their needs, much like a reliable shopkeeper arriving to free you from product paralysis.
