The number of big language models ( LLMs) that OpenAI has made available as alternatives for powering its hit chatbot has rapidly increased in the 2.5 times since the company debuted ChatGPT.

In fact, there are now 7 (!!! ) in total. different AI models available to paying ChatGPT subscribers ( of the$ 20 Plus tier and more expensive tiers ) based on their preferences when interacting with the trustworthy chatbot, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.

But how should a person choose which one to use for a particular task, question, or fast? You can just get one at once, after all.

Is there assistance on the way?

A new “router” function will automatically choose the best OpenAI model to respond to the user’s input on the fly, depending on the specific input’s content, as reports have reported over the past few days on X from AI influencers, including OpenAI’s own researcher” Roon ( @tszzl on X )” ( speculated as being technical team member Tarun Gogineni ).

In since-deleted reaction to influence Lisan al Gaib’s claim that they “don’t like a model network I want to be able to find the models I use, Roon posted on the social system X yesterday, July 20, 2025.

” You’ll still be able to make your choice. This solution aims to prevent doctors from being stuck on 4o-mini.

Similar to what Yuchen Jin, Co-founder and CTO of Hyperbolic Labs, wrote in an X article on July 19:

” Hear GPT-5 inevitable, from a small animal.

  • Many models are involved, not just one. It has a network that toggles between the use of tools, non-reasons, and reasoning models.
  • That’s why Sam claimed they “fixed design naming”: prompts may simply auto-route to the appropriate type.
  • GPT-6 is currently in education.

I really hope they aren’t putting off it for more safety tests. : )”

The router does make life much simpler and smarter for the typical ChatGPT subscriber, despite the fact that a probably much more sophisticated GPT-5 model do ( and will ) be significant news if and when it is released.

It may follow the likes of another third-party items, such as the web-based Token Monster bot, which aggregates responses from various third-party LLMs to answer user queries.

An OpenAI spokesperson declined to respond or provide any additional information at this time when I was asked about the router idea and comments from” Roon.”

Solving the problem of alternative overload

To be clear, OpenAI has carefully disclosed in either a blog post or relieve notes, or both, what it believes a certain LLM design is good for and designed to help with whenever it has made a fresh LLM available to the general public.

For instance, benchmarking tests showed that OpenAI’s “o” set logic designs, o3, o4-mini, and o4-mini large, performed better on math, science, and programming testing, whereas non-reasoning models, like the fresh GPT-4.5 and 4.1, show improvement in creative writing and communication tasks.

Dedicated AI celebrities and energy people may well be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of each of these various models.

Regular customers who don’t follow the industry as attentively or have the time and money to check them all out on the same type prompts and evaluate the outputs will inevitably struggle to understand the confusing range of options.

That may indicate that ChatGPT is omitting smarter, smarter, or more worthy responses for their task. And as Roon alluded to, the distinction could be one of life or death in areas like treatments.

Additionally, it’s intriguing to speculate about how an automatic LLM network may affect general public attitudes and adoption of AI.

In March, ChatGPT had previously recorded 500 million energetic people. The impact of AI on their tasks and the world economy’s overall economy would appear to be much more keenly felt if more of these folks were instantly guided toward more intelligent and capable LLMs to handle their AI concerns, leading to a good” snowball” effect.

In other words, Mai mult şi Mai mult people and organizations would likely be persuaded by the utility of AI and be Mai mult willing to pay for it as Mai mult people saw Mai mult benefits from ChatGPT automatically choosing the right AI model for their queries and as Mai mult businesses gained greater efficiency from this process. As a result, even Mai mult AI-powered workflows would become widely used around the world.

This is presumably being slowed down a little by the fact that the ChatGPT model picker requires the user to A. know they even have a selection of models and B. have some level of informed awareness of what these models are good for. It continues to be manually done.

The typical ChatGPT user currently has an overabundance of options, much like shopping in your town and staring at cereal aisles and different sauces.

Any illogical OpenAI router should be able to seamlessly guide them to the appropriate model for their needs when they require it, much like a reliable shopkeeper showing up to free you from product paralysis.
