Starlink is nearly twice as fast as any other in-flight Wi-Fi solution, according to the latest report by the rate check page Ookla. ( Disclaimer: Ookla is owned by the same parent company as CNET, Ziff Davis. )
The satellite internet business from SpaceX clocked middle get frequencies of 152 megabits per second and download speeds of 24Mbps. That means that Starlink’s frequencies in the air are faster than some online companies on the ground.
Those download and upload velocity were almost twice as fast as any other in-flight online solution, but overhead was where it actually blew the competition away. Starlink’s in-flight delay came in at just 44ms, the next-closest, MTN Satellite Communications, was at 667ms. With those kinds of numbers, you may honestly game online or make a video phone on a Starlink-equipped trip.  ,
How is it probable that Starlink-equipped flights lap the contest so completely? The answer lies with Starlink’s special ships of 7, 000 low-Earth circle spacecraft. These operate about 342 yards above the earth, compared with over 22, 000 km for geosynchronous satellites used by companies like Hughesnet and Viasat.  ,
” That’s just physics, right? You’re going to include a latency of almost a minute when you’re 22, 000 km versus 300 kilometers”, Kerry Baker, the writer of Ookla’s statement, told CNET. ” What was joy therefore was to see the information and the flights collection up just as you’d expect from the science”.
Amazingly, Starlink’s speeds were really faster in the air than on the floor. According to Ookla’s speed test results from the first fourth of 2025, Starlink people in the US received middle access speeds of 105Mbps, add speeds of 15Mbps and overhead of 45ms.  ,  ,
The other key satellite internet services, Hughesnet şi Viasat, even recorded faster velocity in the air than on the floor, although the most recent data from Ookla on these services is from 2023.  ,
According to Ookla’s report, Hawaiian Airlines and Qatar Airways recorded speed test results with Starlink in the first quarter of 2025. United Airlines also began installing Starlink on its planes earlier this year, debuting it on some planes on May 15. Scandinavian Airlines inked a deal in January 2025 to outfit its entire fleet with Starlink.
