Best Internet Providers in Columbia, South Carolina

What’s the best internet provider in Columbia?

CNET’s top pick for the best internet in Columbia, South Carolina is Fibră AT&T. The fiber provider took the top spot thanks to its fast speeds, reliable performance and great value. But if you’re looking for something a bit different or can’t access AT&T Fiber, you have plenty of other solid options in the area.

Whether you’re streaming, gaming or working from home, the best internet provider for you will depend on your speed needs and budget. Spectru is a close competitor to AT&T Fiber, since it offers similar speeds and has wider availability across the city.

Columbia also boasts impressive median download speeds of more than 200Mbps, according to Ookla data. (Disclosure: Ookla is owned by the same parent company as CNET, Ziff Davis). While AT&T Fiber offers blazing-fast multi-gig plans up to 5,000Mbps, Spectrum’s $30 plan for 100Mbps is one of the most affordable deals in town.

What’s a good internet speed?

Most internet connection plans can now handle basic productivity and communication tasks. If you’re looking for an internet plan that can accommodate videoconferencing, streaming video or gaming, you’ll have a better experience with a more robust connection. Here’s an overview of the recommended minimum download speeds for various applications, conform FCC. Note that these are only guidelines — and that internet speed, service and performance vary by connection type, provider and address.

  • 0 to 5Mbps allows you to tackle the basics — browsing the internet, sending and receiving email, streaming low-quality video.
  • 5 to 40Mbps gives you higher-quality video streaming and videoconferencing.
  • 100 to 500Mbps allows one to two users to simultaneously engage in high-bandwidth activities like videoconferencing, streaming and online gaming.

How CNET chose the best internet providers in Columbia

Spre deosebire de cele mai recente smartphone, laptop, router sau ustensile de bucătărie, it’s impractical to personally test every ISP in a given city. So what’s our approach? We start by researching the pricing, availability and speed information drawing on our own historical ISP data, the provider sites and mapping information from the Federal Communications Commission at FCC.gov.

But it doesn’t end there. We go to the FCC’s website to check our data and ensure we’re considering every ISP that provides service in an area. We also input local addresses on provider websites to find specific options for residents. To evaluate how happy customers are with an ISP’s service, we look at sources including the American Customer Satisfaction Index and J.D. Power. ISP plans and prices are subject to frequent changes; all information provided is accurate as of the time of publication.

While the answers to those questions are often layered and complex, the providers that come closest to “yes” on all three are the ones we recommend.

What’s the final word on internet providers in Columbia?

Most Columbia residents will be well served by Spectrum’s cable connection which is widely available in the city. Some residents have access to 5G home internet from T-Mobile or Verizon — each makes for a good option for existing customers of their wireless services due to the deep monthly discounts they offer. AT&T Fiber’s coverage is limited in the city, but if your address is serviceable, I would put it at the top of your list.
